Whiting proving the most popular catch as championship finale looms

Over the past week, shore anglers making the most of the settled weather have been rewarded with a good number of whiting with bass also caught in the mix, writes BEN CALLIGHAN.

Fleetwood and District Angling Club's latest match saw 18 anglers taking part at Beach Road.

Although conditions were OK, the cold northerly wind was a shock to the system.

The fishing was mostly whiting, though it wasn't as good as expected, as the majority of anglers caught fish with only a couple blanking.

Mark Broadhurst stood out, landing 10 whiting worth 72 points to give him top spot overall.

Another standout was David Allen, who had two small bass along with a whiting, giving him second place with 47 points.

Damian Shaw's six whiting and a rockling saw him complete the top three on 45 points.

Fourth place went to Phil Lamb, who had 40 points after landing five whiting.
