Funeral firm duo ‘enriched themselves’

March 12, 2026

A SOLIHULL director and another executive accused of "enriching" themselves using the funds of a collapsed funeral plan provider have denied fraud charges.

Richard Wells, 39, and Neil Debenham, 43, are accused of defrauding the Safe Hands business between 2019 and 2021, allegedly stripping safeguards from money that customers had put aside for their funerals.

Safe Hands was a prepaid funeral plan business which collapsed into administration in 2022. Around 46,000 people had bought plans before the company went under, and had been expecting a contribution towards future funeral costs.
