No home comforts as top five rivals Chelsea overwhelm Villa
Birmingham Mail
|March 05, 2026
VILLA'S buffer inside the top five has been reduced to just three points after losing 4-1 to Champions League-chasing rivals Chelsea last night.
Villa's Ollie Watkins (centre) misses an opportunity on goal at Villa Park Malo Gusto of Chelsea and Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa
Douglas Luiz opened the scoring early on, but Joao Pedro struck twice before the break and then completed his hat-trick after Cole Palmer had extended the lead in the second half.
Defeat to the Blues means Villa are now only three points clear inside the top five ahead of a trip to Manchester United next Sunday.
Villa started brightly and took the lead in the fourth minute when Leon Bailey rolled the ball across the box for Luiz to flick past Filip Jorgensen, after Ollie Watkins cleverly left it.
