MP calls for urgent VAT cut for struggling venues

Bath’s MP has called for an emergency VAT cut as local businesses are said to be “hammered” by the cost-of-living crisis.
Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse, inset right, is calling for an emergency 5% cut on VAT for pubs, restaurants, entertainment and accommodation venues ahead of the upcoming budget on Wednesday, November 26.
In a speech on November 12, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader and Treasury Spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP set out the party's £12 billion plan to tackle the cost of living and support Britain’s high streets, which they claim would put £270 back in people's pockets.
As part of the plan, VAT would be immediately cut from 20% to 15% for hospitality, accommodation and attractions. Mrs Hobhouse said: “People all across Bath work incredibly hard for their paycheck, but throughout this ever-spiralling cost-of-living crisis there is less and less disposable income left to go around.
