Over 3% of Thais suffering poverty

Thailand is still struggling with poverty, with 2.39 million people, or 3.41% of the population, classified as poor in 2023, says research by the Program Management Unit for Area-Based Development (PMU-A).

The Northeast recorded the highest proportion of poor residents at 31.71%, followed by the South at 30.65%, the Central region at 19.07% and the North at 16.98%. Bangkok had the lowest rate at 1.6%. The findings were presented at the second "Fighting Poverty" seminar on Sept 9, where PMU-A director Kitti Sajjawattana warned that poverty remains severe, fuelled by low incomes, heavy household debt, and limited opportunities.
