The death of a former head of China's one-child policy has prompted criticism rather than praise on social media this week, with users condemning the long-abandoned policy.

Peng: Population control tsar dies

State media hailed Peng Peiyun, who headed China's Family Planning Commission from 1988 to 1998, as "an outstanding leader" for her work related to women and children.

Public reaction on Chinese social media following Ms Peng's death in Beijing on Sunday, just short of her 96th birthday, was sharply different.

"Those children who were lost, naked, are waiting for you over there," one user wrote on China's popular microblogging platform Weibo.
