Iran envoy called in, 3 crew still missing

- PORAMET TANGSATHAPORN MONGKOL BANGPRAPA

Thailand has lodged a diplomatic protest with Iran after a Thai-flagged cargo vessel was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz, leaving three Thai crew members missing and prompting an urgent search and rescue effort.

The government has summoned Iran's ambassador in Bangkok while coordinating with Oman to locate the missing sailors.

During a daily briefing at Government House, Panidone Pachimsawat, deputy spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the incident occurred at around 11am Wednesday. The Thai cargo ship Mayuree Naree, carrying 23 Thai crew members, sustained damage to its stern while passing through the strategic waterway after departing Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The Foreign Ministry and the Thai embassy coordinated with Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant authorities. The Royal Navy of Oman successfully rescued 20 crew members and brought them ashore at the port town of Khasab.
