Ethics failures plague Senate

A recent court ruling against Senator Thanakorn Thavornchinachote for stealing from victims of a fatal car accident in Chachoengsao is a disgrace not only for the Upper House but also for the Election Commission (EC).

In its Nov 21 verdict, the Chachoengsao Court sentenced Mr Thanakorn and another culprit to six years in prison after finding they had pretended to help victims on the night of May 31, 2021, before taking valuables worth more than two million baht.
The court reduced the sentence to four years without suspension. Both defendants were released on bail of 100,000 baht.
As the case nears conclusion, it is troubling that the Upper House — particularly those responsible for ethical standards — has taken no action against Mr Thanakorn. Its silence speaks volumes about double standards when compared with the case of Senator Nantana Nantavaropas.
