PM backs move, says deal 'non-binding'
The recent signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the United States on critical and rare earth minerals has sparked widespread public debate, with critics voicing concerns over transparency, national benefit, and long-term strategic implications.
The agreement was signed during the 47th Asean Summit, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Sunday. Under the MoU, the Thai and US governments agreed to establish a framework for cooperation on critical minerals and rare earth elements, which is aimed at enhancing energy security and promoting the creation of a sustainable global supply chain. The initiative seeks to support key strategic industries, such as electric vehicles (EVs), renewable energy, and advanced electronics.
Under the agreement's key provisions, the two countries will collaborate on exploration, processing, research, and technological development related to rare earth elements.
Thailand is expected to play an active role within the global critical minerals supply chain, with an emphasis on increasing domestic value-added production rather than exporting raw materials.
