Big new SUV bridges gap between MG's core EVs and upmarket IM ones

- ■MURRAY SCULLION

BOLDER, BETTER

Ride and handling are good, and the steering's even better.

If I were feeling glib, I'd describe this MG S6 EV as a larger S5 EV — but I'm not, so I won't. That's also beside the point, because you might not know the extent of MG's EV lineup at the moment.

The 4 EV (Volkswagen ID 3-sized), S5 EV (Skoda Elroq-sized) and S6 EV (Skoda Enyaq-sized) all sit on MG's Modular Scalable Platform and form the basis of the Chinese brand's core EV offering.

The upmarket IM sub-brand (with its IM5 and IM6 cars) is the middle ground, then the Cyberster acts as a traditional halo car.

The S6 offers a long range (up to 526km for the rear-wheel-drive cars), lots of space and all the kit you would probably want and does it for a competitive price.

It says a lot about MG that I'm expecting this car to be more than just a numbers game, though I'm expecting it to be good.

MG has never been one to strictly keep to the slightly archaic "letter" segments with its sizing and pricing, so the S6 rivals different cars in different classes, including the Kia EV5, Renault Scenic, Skoda Enyaq and Volkswagen ID 4. Its S5 sibling is a rival too - but it's easy to distinguish between the pair, as the S6 is larger, has more range and is available with four-wheel-drive.
