Anutin's mission impossible?

Observers believe govt won't be able to meet PP's demands, writes Mongkol Bangprapa

When the People's Party (PP) agreed to support Bhumjaithai's bid to form a new government, it outlined a set of conditions, which include the dissolution of the House within four months of the government delivering its policy statement to parliament.

PP also outlined several demands relating to the push to amend the constitution, which are contingent upon the Constitutional Court's ruling on how the government should proceed with the attempt to rewrite the charter.

If the court rules that a public referendum is required before parliament begins the charter drafting process, the process must be completed before the next general election.

But, if no referendum is required, the government must quickly amend Section 256 of the 2017 charter to allow for an elected constitution drafting assembly (CDA), which must be done within the term of the current House.

However, political observers believe that it will take the Bhumjaithai-led government more than four months to meet the conditions set by the PP.

Following the appointment of Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister on Sept 5, the government will need about a month to form a new cabinet, seek royal endorsement, and deliver its policy statement to parliament.
