ALEX Codling knew what he was taking on when he agreed to become Newcastle’s third director of rugby in little over a year.

The much-travelled coach, who last season guided Oyonnax back into the Top 14, is looking to the long-term even though relegation is back on the menu this season.
Since finishing fourth in the 2017-18 campaign, it has been grim for the Falcons. They were relegated the following season and after immediately bouncing back they have not been out of the bottom two. They finished last season in May having parted company with Dave Walder who the previous summer had taken over from Dean Richards as director of rugby.
Codling wants Newcastle to become more ambitious in the way they use the ball and take advantage of the all-weather surface at Kingston Park with the likes of Adam Radwan and Mateo Carreras out wide.
