Spireites’ new striker reckons Cook’s recipe will bring out his best

IT IS five years since Will Grigg finished a season with double figures but the confidence that once made him the most feared hitman in League One remains undimmed.
“I still feel good, I still feel sharp,” says the 32-year-old. “Things happen in football, for a variety of reasons, but I know in myself I’m still that player who can score 20 goals in League One.”
Chesterfield are certainly hoping so. The Spireites fought off competition from several third and fourth tier clubs to land Grigg this summer, a stunning transfer coup to rival Wrexham’s capture of Paul Mullin in 2021.
Yet while Mullin arrived cradling a League Two golden boot, Grigg is coming off the back of several barren seasons. It is why he turned his back on the EFL, and why a reunion with his old Wigan boss, Paul Cook, right, proved so enticing. “I did have offers to play higher,” says Grigg. “But that’s just ego, isn’t it? I’ve never been that person who goes ‘Oh, I’m a Championship player’, ‘I’m a League One player’.
Opportunity
“Honestly, what I really want to do is get back to scoring goals and get back to enjoying my football. I saw this as a massive opportunity to do that.”
