Organic turmeric of Kandhamal district won the National Intellectual Property NIP) Award for 2021-22, presented by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. It was adjudged as the most popular geographical indications Gl) product under agriculture.

Kandhamal Turmeric Wins National Award

It is a matter of pride for the state of Odisha that the organic turmeric cultivated in its district of Kandhamal was selected for the first National Intellectual Property Award 2021-2022, awarded combined by the National Intellectual Property Office and the Chamber of Commerce of Delhi, as the most popular agricultural product having the Geological Indication or the Gl recognition. Its objective is to provide incentive to innovation and creativity as well as strengthening the Intellectual Property economy, which has been decided to be awarded every year to individuals, institutions, organizations and entrepreneurs for achieving the best production and commercialization.

The Gl is a name or recognition, which is given to a product related with a place, town, area or country. In this process, various factors such as the product's source, quality, and properties are taken into consideration. Additionally, the evaluation may include whether the product has been produced using traditional methods and/or is associated with the name and reputation of a specific region. The organic turmeric of Kandhamal has all these qualifications and, therefore, has been accorded with such recognition by the Intellectual Property, India in 2019.
