PHARMACEUTICAL ingredients are mainly divided into two parts i.e. active and inactive pharmaceutical ingredients.

With 50.40% in 2024, captive APIs led the market

The essential, physiologically active component of pharmaceutical goods that produces therapeutic benefits is known as the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) whereas substances added to support the API and have no direct therapeutic action such as binders, fillers, disintegrants and lubricants are known as inactive pharmaceutical ingredients or excipients. APIs, which are the basis for medication development and manufacture, are essential to the pharmaceutical supply chain worldwide, regardless of whether they are chemically synthesised or derived from nature. The need for advanced APIs is anticipated to rise as the pharmaceutical sector transitions to cutting-edge treatments and creative delivery methods.

The elderly population is growing worldwide.

Around 771 million people were 65 years of age, according to the UN, and that number is expected to rise 1.6 billion by 2050. According to estimates, the number of individuals in Africa who are 60 years of age or older will triple by 2050.

Age is thought to be the biggest risk factor for the onset of illnesses, such as neurological and cardiovascular conditions. Thus, the world's ageing population is having a significant impact on the API industry due to its rapid growth.

The market is expanding due to the rising incidence of hospital-acquired infections and infectious disorders. Furthermore, the rising prevalence of neurological, genetic, and cardiovascular conditions is predicted to have a significant impact on market expansion.

The market is expected to develop due to reasons such as rising obesity rates, dietary abnormalities, and lifestyle epidemiology, which are supported by the growing number of smokers worldwide. Therefore, API outsourcing is now more profitable than producing them inside.
