THREADS OF COMPASSION

Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Diplomatist

September 2025

Some days etch themselves in memory, not because they were pre-planned galas or monumental announcements, but because they carried within them the joy of surprise, the warmth of togetherness, and the quiet reminder of why community matters.

THREADS OF COMPASSION

One such day for me was 14th September, when the entire Diplomatist family tiptoed into a conspiracy of affection.

It was our publisher, Linda Hawke's birthday. She radiates an energy that never fails to inspire. If enthusiasm could be bottled, hers would outlast us all. She carries the vigour of a go-getter, the curiosity of a student, and the discipline of a craftsperson. On that bright September afternoon, the heads of different departments joined forces to orchestrate a surprise for her. The plan was deceptively simple: appear at her residence unannounced, armed with cakes, flowers, and irrepressible cheer.

When she opened the door and saw us standing there, grinning like children caught red-handed, her expression was priceless. There was genuine shock, followed by that luminous smile of hers that can light up any room.

But amidst the balloons and the banter, there was another moment that, for me, captured the essence of her spirit. She pulled out a folded, carefully wrapped blanket-in-progress—a patchwork of colour and texture that she had been knitting since January this year. Each square, she explained, had been patiently completed month after month, squeezed between meetings and an endless stream of professional responsibilities. What emerged was not just a blanket; it was a mosaic of discipline, passion, and above all, love.

Message

Across societies and cultures, the stories of women have always been powerful sources of resilience, creativity and transformation. Yet for much of history, many of these stories remained largely within families and communities rather than in public spaces where they could inspire wider change.
