Are there times when a top-ofthe-range acoustic guitar is just foo good to use for the job in hand?
Back in the days when I was teaching guitar for a living, I had a student called Melanie who was into acoustic blues. In fact, her chosen period of the blues was very specific - pre-1940s country blues and, in particular, Robert Johnson. Prior to the lessons she took with me she had bought herself a good acoustic guitar. I can't remember the make, but I thought it was totally fit for purpose. However, Melanie had a problem with it that took us a few weeks to unravel. She was listening to a lot of pre-war country blues and she said that she just couldn't get the right sound from her guitar.
