UNDERSTANDING THYROID HORMONES TSH, T3, AND T4

THE THYROID GLAND, located in the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, energy production, and overall health. It does this through three key hormones: TSH, T3, and T4.

1. TSH (Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone)
Produced by the pituitary gland in the brain.
- Acts like a "messenger" that tells the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4.
- High TSH = Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) The body signals the thyroid to make more hormones.
- Low TSH = Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) The body signals the thyroid to slow down hormone production.
2. T3 (Triiodothyronine)
The active form of thyroid hormone, responsible for metabolism and energy regulation.
Exists in two forms:
- Total T3 (bound to proteins in the blood)
- Free T3 (unbound, available for body use)
