As she entered her fifties, Catherine Campbell found herself divorced with four grown-up kids. On top of being a busy mum, she was also a hard-working, dedicated nurse. Having spent the last 20 years of her long career at Melbourne's Austin Hospital, Catherine knew she could either stick with what was familiar – or go on an adventure. She chose the latter.

"I wanted something different, a challenge," Catherine, now 53, tells New Idea. "I also thought I could give back to people who have less access to healthcare and live in the middle of nowhere."

In August 2022, Catherine moved to Perth, WA, and completed an orientation course for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).

The service, which is run by doctors, nurses and pilots, provides flights for those in desperate medical need all over Australia.
