One brisk May morning, I asked a teenage Woolworths employee who was stocking the shelves, “Don’t you ever crave a nice, hot Vegemite-flavoured drink? You know, when you're feeling sick ... to make you feel better?”

I had been sick as a dog with a chest infection for the better part of the week and finally mustered the energy to head to the doctor before getting some groceries.

“A Vegemite ... drink?” she repeated slowly. “I’m not sure we, um ... ” she trailed off.
