As a mother and grandmother, Judy Moran experienced her share of heartache. Her sons, Mark and Jason, were gunned down as part of Melbourne's gangland wars in 2000 and 2003. Her estranged partner, Lewis, was also shot in 2004 as he sipped a beer at the pub.

But in 2011, Moran, then 66, was found guilty of hiring a hit man to murder her brother-in-law, Desmond 'Tuppence' Moran, as he enjoyed a coffee at a neighbourhood deli. There was reportedly no love lost between Tuppence and Moran, and they fell out because Moran believed she deserved a more generous portion of Lewis' estate after he died.

After the hit man shot Tuppence, Moran drove the getaway car and hid the gun at her home.

In Melbourne's Supreme Court, Judge Lex Lasry found Moran guilty of murder and handed down a 26-year sentence. She showed little emotion and simply said, “Sir, you are wrong. I am innocent.”
