Inside Shubham Vaidkar's Closet: A Little Armani, A Lot of Restraint

Shubham Vaidkar isn’t trying too hard—and that's the point.

The 24-year-old Mumbai-based model, who transitioned from civil engineering to fashion in 2024, approaches style with a clarity shaped by structure and precision. Only now, the focus is on silhouettes, fit, and knowing when to stop.

He comes from a humble background where academics came first. While studying engineering, Vaidkar discovered fashion and immersed himself in it—studying models and understanding the industry until it became intentional. He didn’t tell his family about modelling until his first project released; though supportive, they insisted he complete his degree, which he did. He also worked a Rs 30,000-a-month job for six months, balancing it with modelling until it became sustainable.

His rise has been swift. From walking for Shivan & Narresh in 2023 to debuting at Milan Fashion Week for Giorgio Armani in January 2024—and returning for multiple seasons, including the brand's 50th anniversary show—Vaidkar has built a steady global presence. Today, he earns €5000-6000 per day.

DAG's recently-concluded exhibition titled Destination India: Foreign Artists in India, 18571947, organised in collaboration with Kolkata's Alipore Museum, offered a rare glimpse into the multifaceted artistic interpretations of India through the eyes of nearly forty British and other European artists working with oil and watercolour who visited the country in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries-a period when images were being transmitted as picture postcards and photography had become the dominant medium.
