But although there's irony in that particular scenario, whether it's unsavoury comments or party snaps from the past coming back to haunt us, never before have there been so many ways to alienate employers and shrink our professional horizons on social media.

While it's a little harder to fire employees over social media missteps in South Africa than it is in the US, it can happen, which means if you're a TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and/or Twitter user like the rest of us, you'd best get clued up on what constitutes a CLM. Social media rants or indiscretions could hurt your chances of promotion or employment down the line, or even warrant termination of your current employment.
