David J Shaw's arresting imagery takes us to the world of Welsh upland farmers, where dedication to the land is unwavering and traditional methods are subject to the environmental and economic pressures of today

UPLAND OF MY FATHERS

AUCTION DAY

Livestock under the hammer at the Dolgellau farmers' market. Despite the challenges this farming community faces, their dedication to the land, animals and community is unwavering. The farmers feel proud of their heritage and identity, and proud to continue the lifestyle they inherited, which includes battling with the elements daily and a constant pressure to provide the food that helps feed the nation.

The idea behind my 'Caeadda' photo reportage was to explore the community of upland (hill) farmers in the Dyfi Valley, on the southern most reach of Eryri (Snowdonia) in Wales, examining tradition, identity and family. Caeadda, which means 'Adam's Field' in Welsh, is the name of the farm belonging to the Pughe family, who are featured in these images. The land, way of life and knowledge has been passed down through the family over seven generations and will be managed with care until it's time for the next cohort to start their guardianship.

A lifestyle of hard work is a significant part of an upland farmer's identity, and the community has a deep, personal relationship with these hills. Alongside tending livestock in tough terrain and all weathers, the next generation of farmers are also highly vulnerable to economic difficulties and environmental pressures. A farm's success is never certain.
