Cindy took charge of her own attic conversion project - if you're thinking of doing the same, take note of these handy hints
The exact responsibilities of a project manager can vary between projects. But, as a general rule, they are there to organise, coordinate, communicate and provide advice at every stage. Ensuring a renovation is completed on time, within budget and to a high standard is no small feat so, if you are thinking of taking on the task yourself, take a look at our quick guide for some helpful pointers.
DO research the process
Taking on a project manager role is not for everyone, and all the different elements of a renovation project can seem overwhelming. Take some time to read up on what's involved from start to finish, so that you can make an informed decision on whether you're cut out for the job.
DON'T assume that it's going to be easy
A project manager is highly skilled and will guide you through the renovation process from start to finish. Their many responsibilities include coordinating the various stages of the project, working closely with architects, suppliers and tradespeople, and ensuring that the project is finished on time, to a high standard and within budget.
DO have confidence in your own ability
If you're highly organised and have the time and skills, then why shouldn't you take on the challenge of managing your own renovation? You'll feel a huge sense of achievement, learn plenty along the way, and it may spur you on to tackle other projects in the future.
DON'T take on too much
While the idea may be tempting, consider how well you would cope with managing the project on top of the general upheaval of the renovation. If you have a busy work and family schedule and other commitments, you may find yourself wishing you'd left it to the professionals.
DO get designs in place before building starts
