Pooja Bihani crafts a cocoon of continuity and connection for a multigenerational family in this Kolkata duplex

A RESERVED HAND

Designing a home for a multigenerational family is always layered, but this one carried particular weight. Following the sudden loss of their mother, three young children found themselves in the care of their grandmother, while their father looked to create a space that could hold memory, healing, and new beginnings. Architect Pooja Bihani of Spaces and Design was entrusted with translating that emotional brief into form. “We wanted the home to feel fluid and intuitive, with every space naturally leading into the next,” she says. “That sense of ease became the spine of the project.”

Named ‘#reserved’ for both the emotional intimacy it protects and the pared-back design choices it embraces, the home is built around tonal warmth and layered materials. “The design had to feel grounded, like the comfort of a grandparent’s presence, but also mirror the father’s global outlook,” Pooja explains.
