Royal Banquettes

Tasked with gut renovating the small kitchen of a 1910 Kansas City, Missouri, home, Elizabeth Bennett and Mallory Robins (the duo behind Kobel + Co) decided bigger was better.

They tore down a dining room wall and installed custom seating along 14 and a half feet of the newfound space—without moving the enormous window. “We designed the banquette with curved corners for comfort and a plinth base to add permanence,” Robins says. In each of the dining areas on these pages, everyone can share the best seat in the house.

When Sara Hillery designed a breakfast spot for this Virginia kitchen, she focused on fulfilling her clients' three requests: “Make it light, bright, and blue.” Hillery checked all three boxes and also made it freestanding, so that it's easy to bring with them if they ever move.
