A New England lake house embraces the simplicity of this beloved style while taking a fresh approach to its design hallmarks of minimalism, utility, and timeless beauty.

New Hampshire's Lake Winnipesaukee is a real-life On Golden Pond-a vacationland tucked in the White Mountains that, come fall, is awash in fluttering pumpkin spice hues. So when Portland, ME-based Heidi Lachapelle Interiors was enlisted to design a family getaway home, they jumped.

There was just one problem: The architectural plans were too embellished for their liking, so they made some tweaks, removing beaded details on the cabinetry and streamlining ornate window moldings. "We're always thinking about place, and I think our process was to look to New England simplicity," says cofounder Katie Judkins.
