How to eat less meat, without missing out
-
Cutting out meat has become increasingly popular. In fact, 20%* of Brits turned to vegetarianism during the pandemic, with 43% saying environmental, health and animal rights were their reasons. But if you don't want to completely give up meat, you can adopt a flexitarian diet. Cutting back on meat consumption, even two days a week, can still boost your health and have a positive effect on the environment. So, what do you need to consider? And what meat-free alternatives can you eat to ensure you're still getting essential nutrients and vitamins? Our experts weigh in...
Why lower your intake?
'It has been shown to reduce and even reverse heart disease, as well as help with weight loss, lowering blood sugar levels and improving insulin sensitivity, which can result in lower likelihood of type 2 diabetes,' says holistic nutritionist and professional chef Gabrielle Masefield.
Cutting out meat may also be linked to lower instances of certain types of cancer, as well as improving symptoms for other conditions, such as arthritis.
Things to consider
'If you're thinking about going plant-based, you should make the most of nutritious foods such as vegetables, beans, pulses and lentils, which are a rich source of key minerals,' says Healthspan nutritionist Rob Hobson. 'Eating a wide variety of foods helps to improve the nutrients you glean from your diet.' Nutrients, such as protein, iron and vitamin B12, can be a concern when going plant-based.
