It's a tough life being a royal - thank goodness for the world's top spas where one can relax in luxury

- KERRY PARNELL

Fit for a PRINCESS

Ever wondered where the Royal Family goes when they want a bonus spot of pampering? Princess Diana loved Champneys health spa in Tring - so much so, they even have a suite decorated in her honour. We checked in for a relaxing retreat, to see what the classic spa in Hertfordshire offers, and checked out feeling like a princess.

imageThe spa, which celebrates its centenary this year, was the first 'health farm' in the UK. Opened in 1925 by naturopath Stanley Lief, it's set in and around a grand mansion, approached by a long crunchy gravel drive and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The historic house now has an enormous, state-of-the-art spa complex adjoining it, where you can choose to go for a swim, or to relax in the thalassotherapy pool, go to the gym, take multiple exercise classes, or indulge in facials, massages, manicures and pedicures in the large beauty therapy area.

imageThere are grand rooms and suites in the mansion, or modern accommodation in the wing and adjoining buildings. We checked into one of the roomy original mansion suites, which Diana enjoyed, and it came with fabulous views. As we gazed out at the terraces and lawns, we couldn't help but reflect this was the view Diana would have taken in, so often, when she needed respite.
