Compression wear is designed to improve performance, beat fatigue, cut muscle soreness and boost your recovery - here are our top picks

DRESS TO COMPRESS

Designed to be worn during and after training, the primary aim of compression gear is to increase blood flow: moving oxygen to - and waste away from - tired muscles. During tough sessions, these tight-fitting baselayers also help to support the muscles, cutting the impact vibrations that can cause more of the micro damage that leads to delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS). The best compression tights and tops can therefore help to fight muscle fatigue and reduce post-workout muscle soreness, as well as speed up recovery between sessions.

While plenty of athletes and trainers swear by compression gear, the scientific jury is still out as to whether wearing it will actually enhance your performance during workouts. However, there is much more compelling evidence for the positive impact it has on post-workout recovery.

What to look for

The best compression tops out there feature sweat-wicking, quick-drying, breathable technical fabrics that help to regulate body temperature in both hot and cold conditions. When you're buying compression gear, the first thing to consider is the level of compression it offers. Not all compression kit offers medical-grade compression, which is something to look for if your main aim is promoting recovery.

Some compression tops are suitable to wear both during and after your workouts. Others often the tighter-fitting, more constrictive gear - are better used for recovery alone. Fit is also more important than with regular tops, so ensure you pay close attention to the sizing and don't automatically go for your usual trying before you buy is best.
