Understanding Chronic Pelvic Pain

What Is Chronic Pelvic Pain? Chronic pelvic pain is defined as pain in the lower abdomen or pelvis that lasts for six months or longer. Unlike typical menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), which occur only around menstruation, CPP can be constant or intermittent and may not be linked to your period at all. The pain may range from dull and achy to sharp and stabbing. It can disrupt daily life, affect mental health, and even interfere with intimate relationships.
When Period Pain Becomes a Concern It's common for women to assume that pain is just part of having a period. But here are some red flags that may suggest something more serious:
- Pain that persists outside of your period
- Pain during or after sex
- Pain while urinating or having a bowel movement
- Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding
- Pain that interferes with daily activities
- No relief from pain medications
If you experience any of these, it's important to consult a doctor.
