Key Signs and Symptoms to Watch For Preventing ACL Injuries with Comprehensive Strategies

- Dr. Arun Kumar

Is It an ACL Tear?

If you experience these symptoms after a knee injury, don't ignore them. Early diagnosis and treatment can help restore knee function and prevent long-term damage.

An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is a common knee injury, especially among athletes involved in sports that require sudden stops, jumps, or changes in direction—such as basketball, soccer, and football.

The ACL is one of the major ligaments in the knee, providing stability by connecting the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). A tear can occur when the knee twists or hyperextends suddenly, often during:

  • Sudden stops or pivots

  • Awkward landings from jumps

  • Direct impact or collisions

Key Signs and Symptoms of an ACL Tear

  • A Loud “Pop” or Popping Sensation: Many people report hearing or feeling a “pop” in the knee at the moment of injury. This is often the first sign of an ACL tear.

  • Severe Pain and Swelling: Within 24 hours, the knee typically swells significantly due to bleeding inside the joint. Pain can range from moderate to severe, making it difficult to walk or bear weight.

  • Instability or “Giving Way” of the Knee: A torn ACL can cause the knee to feel unstable, as if it might buckle or “give out” when trying to stand, walk, or pivot.

  • Loss of Full Range of Motion: Swelling and pain may limit the knee's ability to bend or straighten fully. Some people also experience stiffness.

  • Difficulty Walking or Bearing Weight: Due to pain and instability, walking may become challenging.
