CHARLOTTE SPENCER, HUGH BONNEVILLE and EMUN ELLIOTT on how the search for the Brink's-Mat loot takes a fresh turn

- CAREN CLARK

THE GOLD

NEW SUNDAY & TUESDAY, 9PM, BBC1 DRAMA (BOX SET, BBC IPLAYER)

The Brink’s-Mat robbery continues to cast a long shadow as BBC1’s The Gold returns for a second, six-part series.

At the end of the last run of the drama, inspired by the 1983 theft of £26 million worth of bullion from a warehouse near London’s Heathrow Airport, detectives Brian Boyce (played by Hugh Bonneville), Nicki Jennings (Charlotte Spencer) and Tony Brightwell (Emun Elliott) helped convict several of those involved. They have realised, however, that those criminals only ever had half of the gold and the rest is still missing.

The team is now hell-bent on following the trail of the loot and finding robber Charlie Miller (Sam Spruell), who they believe stashed it away. Meanwhile, they also want to bring down John Palmer (Tom Cullen), dubbed ‘Goldfinger’, who melted down some of the gold but was acquitted and is running a timeshare empire in Tenerife.

But with pressure from their bosses to close the investigation - the longest and most expensive in Metropolitan Police history - and their increasingly tangled hunt taking them from the Isle of Man to the Caribbean, can they ever get the results they want?
