Happy couple Martha and Humphrey face new challenges as the Death in Paradise spin-off returns

- STEVEN PERKINS, ALISON SLADE

A match made in DEVON

In the last series of BBC1’s Beyond Paradise, DI Humphrey Goodman (Kris Marshall) and Martha Lloyd (Sally Bretton) realised their long-awaited wedding day was becoming far too extravagant for their liking and ultimately decided to stay unmarried for the time being.

As the Devon-set Death in Paradise spin-off begins its third outing, the couple remain deeply in love, but soon face new challenges. With Martha deciding to move her restaurant, Ten Mile Kitchen, to bigger premises, the couple find themselves struggling to make time for each other, which leaves them wondering if they can commit to fostering a child in the long-term as they’d hoped.

Here, Marshall, 51, and Bretton, 44, tell TV&Satellite Week what’s in store for their characters…

How are Humphrey and Martha doing at the start of the series?

Bretton They had that lovely non-wedding, where they were committed to one another but weren't going to get married in a way that didn’t feel right for them, so they’re in a happy spot and very together.

Marshall They are a strong, quirky couple and they embrace each other’s strengths and flaws. We find them in a really good place, which is needed because they are on this fostering journey, which has its own challenges.
