Operation Epic Fury: What to Know About the U.S. and Israeli Attack on Iran
The skies over Tehran, along with more than 130 cities across Iran, have filled with smoke and echoed with explosions since Feb. 28 as the nation has come under attack from ongoing U.S.-Israeli air strikes. In the opening hours of the bombings, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, 86, and more than 40 senior officials were killed. More than 550 deaths have been reported across the nation—along with six U.S. service members who died in a retaliatory strike in Kuwait—in a campaign that has significantly damaged critical Iranian infrastructure, military bases and air defenses. Two days after the start of Operation Epic Fury, President Trump addressed his objectives in a March 2 speech, saying he wanted to destroy Iran’s missile capabilities, its ability to produce new missiles and its navy, adding, “We’re ensuring that the world’s number one sponsor of terror can never obtain a nuclear weapon.” In follow-up comments, Trump did not rule out sending U.S. troops into the country “if necessary,” adding that the campaign, which has spawned retaliatory attacks by Iran in at least nine nations across the Middle East, is projected to last four to five weeks, but could go “far longer.” It remains to be seen if the military operation—described by UN Secretary-General António Guterres as a “grave threat to international peace and security”—will topple the regime or expand into a regional war that could spark a large-scale refugee crisis and global economic disruption due to rising oil prices.
