AFTER A GRAMMY WIN, OSCAR NOMINATION AND SUPER BOWL PERFORMANCE, SINGERACTRESS ANDRA DAY TRIES HER HAND AT HORROR WITH THE DELIVERANCE

- ERIC ANDERSSON

A NEW DAY FOR ANDRA

Andra Day’s hopes for a midsummer vacation were dashed by an impossibly packed schedule. The singer and actress was set to kick off a (since-postponed) multicity tour in August while also promoting her new horror film The Deliverance, then turn around to do press for another drama out in October, Exhibiting Forgiveness. “I was like, ‘Hold on, y’all. Now wait a minute,’” she says with a laugh. “I believe in Jesus—I’m not Jesus, I’m not God. I can’t be in 20 places at the same time!”

Over the past few years it sure seems like Day, 39, has been everywhere—on TV collecting a Best Actress Golden Globe for The United States vs. Billie Holiday in 2021 (her very first leading film role, which also snagged her an Oscar nomination), performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at the Super Bowl earlier this year, and promoting her new album Cassandra (cherith) on talk shows like Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen while also continuing to make music and movies. It’s no wonder Day says her life at the moment is a “cocktail” of tumult, excitement and joy.
