Content creators and marketers can get valuable information by tracking the number of followers, subscribers, or other user statistics for their social media accounts. An attractive, desktop “FollowerCounter” that is self-contained, easy to use, affordable, and can be tailored to track metrics from Instagram, YouTube, or X provides valuable information and a valuable lesson in building around available data.

For influencers, businesses, and content creators, follower counts across social media platforms have evolved from simple numbers into vital metrics for success. Tracking these numbers is essential for monitoring growth, securing brand collaborations, and engaging audiences. Platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and others have made it easier than ever to cultivate and connect with audiences worldwide. But accessing these metrics often requires navigating apps or dashboards—tools that are effective, though not always intuitive or convenient.

To solve the data problem I built FollowerCounter, a hardware-based solution that brings real-time social media metrics into the physical world. Designed as a desk or shelf accessory (Figure 1), this device allows users to track their follower counts at a glance, without relying on smartphones or computers. Whether you're a content creator tracking milestones or a marketer monitoring campaign performance, this project offers an elegant way to bring your social media data to life.
