This is a fine and detailed reassessment of the infamous and much maligned Maginot Line. The dilemma the French faced in the 1930s was whether they should adopt manoeuvre warfare, advocated by the likes of General Charles de Gaulle, or seek inspiration from France's victory at Verdun and hide behind fixed fortifications. They chose the latter course of action.
