Apple to reveal 'newest member of the family'

Just as we were going to press, Apple CEO Tim Cook took to X to announce an Apple event taking place on Wednesday 19 February, with several new launches planned, including 'the newest member of the family'.

While an updated iPhone SE and an M4-powered MacBook Air have been hotly anticipated for months, most Apple watchers were expecting these to be revealed by press release - not a dedicated event.

Trailed by an animated video showing a shimmering metallic Apple logo inside a circle, the announcement lends credence to the claim that Apple may unveil its long-anticipated Home hub, along with other products, including a fourth-gen iPhone SE (potentially renamed the iPhone 16E), updated versions of the entry-level iPad and iPad Air, plus a second-gen AirTag.

Of these, the 2025 iPhone SE (or 16E) is expected to feature a design that's reminiscent of the iPhone 14, with a 6.1-inch display and Face ID instead of Touch ID. The Face ID module and 12MP front camera will sit in the notch at the top of the screen, meaning the SE will lack the Dynamic Island found on other current iPhone models. The iPhone SE will likely miss out on 120Hz ProMotion to keep costs down, although it is expected to get an OLED display with Ceramic Shield for improved drop protection, plus a single 48MP camera on its rear.
