Nate Drake goes head-to-head with Red Hat-based distros this month, so is glad to have the heavyweight Rocky in his corner.

Rocky 9.1

At Linux Format, we're very Debian-based Linux, into but don't want you to think that we've anything against RPM distros. One of the best known is Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), a commercial version of Linux.

This may sound counterintuitive, as the whole ethos of Linux is one of free and open source software. Red Hat does make its source code publicly available but also sells subscriptions and training. Other developers can use RHEL's source code to make their own distros, as is the case with Rocky 9.1.

Rocky Linux was originally pioneered by one of the founders of CentOS, Gregory Kurtzer. After Red Hat announced last year that it wouldn't continue development of CentOS, the community-supported free version of RHEL, the team at Rocky stepped up to create this binary-compatible release.
