PAY DISPARITY IN HOLLYWOOD IS STILL RIFE, BUT THESE ACTORS HAVE JOINED FORCES TO MAKE A CHANGE
-
Sienna Miller & Chadwick Boseman
Miller once said she was left “embarrassed” after asking for higher salaries, to no avail. But everything changed when she signed on to play opposite the late Boseman in 2019 crime thriller 21 Bridges. After he passed away in 2020, she told Empire how her costar reallocated a portion of his salary to ensure she was paid equally.
“It is unfathomable to imagine another man in that town behaving that graciously or respectfully,” the 43-year-old explained. “It was about the most astounding thing that I've experienced. That kind of thing just doesn’t happen. He said, ‘You're getting paid what you deserve, and what you're worth.’”
Miller suggested that despite Boseman’s activism in the face of blatant sexism, she wasn't sure others had his moral compass. “I've told other male actor friends of mine that story and they all go very, very quiet and go home,” she added.
Mark Wahlberg & Michelle WilliamsBack in 2019, Williams went to Capitol Hill to bring up the issue of the gender pay gap, having experienced the effects of it some years before.
The 44-year-old was left “paralysed” when she learned she was paid around $1800 compared to costar Mark Wahlberg's $2.3 million for reshoots of their 2017 film, All The Money in the World. She took the news public, declaring that no bigwigs budged when she alerted them to her knowledge.
“No-one cared. This came as no surprise to me, it simply reinforced my life-learned belief that equality is not an inalienable right and that women would always be working just as hard for less money,” she said.
After hearing of the shocking disparity, Wahlberg donated his reshoot earnings to not-for-profit organisation Time's Up in Williams’ honour.
