The voluntary renunciation of his Duke of York title turned out to be too little, too late. In a historic move by the palace, usually reserved for traitors to Crown and Country, King Charles announced that he is taking formal action to strip his younger brother of his style, titles and honours, leaving him to be known simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor.

The extraordinary measure completes the downfall of the former war hero, 65, who found himself outcast over his long friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. “Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse,” a palace statement said.
