Is Materialists the Most Shocking Rom-Com Ever?

Dakota Johnson has a surplus of men, but an incredibly dark development overshadows her choice of Mr. Right

A rom-com built around a love triangle is typically full-on fun, and Materialists (in theaters June 13) — with Dakota Johnson’s Lucy torn between two handsome, appealing yet very different suitors — looks like another glossy entry in the subgenre. It’s not, and it’s important to underline that upfront. In fact, Lucy’s moment of clarity only happens after someone in her orbit is sexually assaulted and she digs deep in her conversations with the survivor.
