After noticing a disturbing trend of young — under 40 — long-distance-running patients who had advanced colorectal cancer, Dr. Tim Cannon of Virginia’s Inova Schar Cancer Institute launched a study to investigate whether there could be a link between extreme exercise and an elevated risk of developing colon cancer.
He recruited 100 marathon and ultramarathon runners aged 35 to 50 for the study. Participants underwent a colonoscopy and completed a questionnaire about their dietary habits, bowel history and running patterns.
