TWO young women napping on a California beach notorious for powerful swells and unpredictable sneaker waves lost their lives after being swept out to sea, authorities say.

Harshita Nair, 21, and Mahial Sran, 20, were relaxing beneath a natural rock archway at Panther Beach in Bonny Doon, Calif., just before sunset when a massive wall of water surged from the shore and snatched the college students from the sand.
