Reinterpreting Korean Street Fashion through Sustainable Design Practices

Abstract : Korean street fashion has evolved into a powerful global cultural force, shaped by Seoul's vibrant urban energy, youth innovation, and the worldwide influence of K-pop and digital media. More than an aesthetic trend, it embodies South Korea's soft power—projecting cultural identity and shaping international perceptions of contemporary Korean creativity. Yet, this dynamic industry faces urgent sustainability challenges, from overproduction and waste to environmentally harmful practices.

This study explores how sustainable design principles can be effectively integrated into Korean streetwear without compromising its creativity and cultural authenticity. Drawing upon theories of cultural identity, sustainability frameworks such as slow fashion and circular design, and the role of digital media in trend dissemination, the research analyses case studies of four prominent Korean brands—RE;CODE, ADER error, Gentle Monster, and WOOYOUNGMI. Each represents a unique intersection of sustainability, culture, and innovation.

Using qualitative and analytical methods, including literature review, case studies, and visual ethnography of Seoul's fashion scene, the paper proposes a framework for sustainable Korean streetwear that balances cultural influence with environmental ethics. For the author, a designer deeply inspired by Korean aesthetics, this study merges academic inquiry with creative exploration, demonstrating how street fashion can serve as both cultural expression and ecological stewardship.
