Multiphysics modelling is transforming manufacturing processes by improving precision and efficiency, as highlighted in the recent Manufacturing Today webinar, 'Multiphysics Modeling of Manufacturing Processes Using COMSOL".

Multiphysics modelling in manufacturing

In an era where precision and efficiency are paramount, the intersection of engineering and technology is paving the way for advancements in manufacturing. One such innovation is multiphysics modelling, a comprehensive approach that combines various physical phenomena into a single framework, enabling engineers to simulate complex processes with remarkable accuracy.

In a recent webinar organised by Manufacturing Today India, on "Multiphysics Modelling of Manufacturing Process Using Comsol', Ashish Uppu, Technology Specialist, COMSOL, detailed how multiphysics modelling is transforming the manufacturing sector.

What is multiphysics modelling?

According to the Oxford Dictionary, multiphysics modelling is defined as the study of multiple interacting physical properties within a simulated environment. Traditional engineering simulations often focus on discrete phenomena, such as fluid dynamics or heat transfer. However, the real world is far more complex, with several physical processes influencing one another. Uppu explains, "The idea here is that any particular environment consists of a combination of physical phenomena, and the ability to fully couple these phenomena in a virtual environment is the role of a multiphysics tool." He continues, "In a manufacturing context, processes like welding or quenching involve multiple interacting factors, such as temperature changes, material phase transformations, and structural mechanics. Multiphysics enables us to simulate these interactions comprehensively, offering insights that would be challenging to obtain through traditional methods."
