How Boyne Capital helped a third-generation Oklahoma contractor triple in size while keeping the family in charge.

The PE Firm That Actually Listens to Founders

Boyne Capital's founder-focused approach helped McKee Utility Contractors grow.

After a record year in 2022, Shane and Tyler McKee weren't looking to cash out of their family’s water infrastructure company, McKee Utility Contractors. The brothers, both in their early 40s, were seeking a partner who would help them honor their grandfather's legacy while providing the capital needed to scale. They found that partner in Boyne Capital, a Miami-based private equity firm that's built its reputation on being a true partner to founders.

“We need to find a commonality of vision. We are not great at providing only liquidity to help owners cash out of their businesses. It's less attractive to us. We're better when we're partnering with somebody like the McKees that have growth aspirations that are audacious,” says Derek McDowell, founder and managing partner at Boyne.

“With the McKees, we saw an extremely capable management team with a clear vision on how they could be the largest player in their market," adds Roman Krislav, managing director at Boyne, who led the McKee investment.
