Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad performed a two-stage corrective surgery on a one-year-old girl born with bilateral radial club hand, a rare congenital deformity that occurs in about one in two lakh births when affecting both hands.

FORTIS ESCORTS CORRECTS RARE DEFORMITY; SAVES ANOTHER MAN'S LIMB

The child had misaligned forearms and absent thumbs, placing her at risk of permanent disability. Investigations also revealed an associated congenital heart anomaly, increasing surgical risk. The condition was managed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr Manish Nanda, Additional Director, Plastic Surgery, Fortis Escorts Hospital Faridabad.

The procedure followed a globally accepted two-stage approach over one month. In the first stage, an external device was applied to stretch tight skin and soft tissues around the wrist to create space for correction. In the second stage, surgeons centralised the forearm bone to stabilise the wrist and allow straighter growth of the hand.
